The Dark Side of Money: Protecting Yourself Online

When it comes to protecting yourself online, there are some small steps you can take to give yourself a fighting chance. After all, when you spend your hard-earnt money, you want to know that your money is safe; and you get what you pay for!

Do Your Research

Just like you wouldn’t buy something from the boot of a car in a layby, websites can be just as dodgy. Always check out reviews, whether the company has an address, contact details, and their socials. If you go into the terms and conditions of most sites, they will have their limited company name. You can check this out on Company Check, to see their credentials. Make sure the website is secure; it should start with https and have the padlock in front of their web address.

Use PayPal or Credit Cards

When checking out and paying for your items, always protect yourself further by using your credit card, PayPal, or both. This way, if you do have any issues, you have more chance of getting help in claiming your money back; or sorting any issues that may arise.

PayPal offers something called Buyers Protection Programme. This means you are entitled to a refund for the full price paid of your item; including any postage or shipping costs, if you do not receive your item, or you have received the wrong item.

With credit cards, anything you buy over £100 and under £30,000, you are covered by Section 75 of the consumer credit act. This means the credit card is equally as responsible as the retailer of your purchase, if you have any issues.

Update, Update, Update!

A really simple one, but make sure all of your tech is up to date! This means downloading any software on phones, laptops, tablets and apps, so make sure you are as protected as you can be. Software updates will provide added protocols and protection, and address any highlighted previous issues. Making sure everything is up to date is a quick and easy way to make sure you are shopping as safely as you can.

Public Wi-Fi

A huge issue with cyber security is the lack of safety around public Wi-Fi. Potentially, any information you input whilst using public Wi-Fi could be easily hacked. From logins and passwords, to online banking, pictures and more – you are extremely vulnerable when using it. Be aware!

Know Your Consumer Rights

Every consumer (you) is covered by your consumer rights. This means you are protected on almost all purchases you make, including online, and can give you another layer of protection if things go wrong.

All in all, shopping online can be quick, fun, and easy – as long as you do it safely. Follow our steps above and you’ll have all the protection you need for a quick retail therapy sesh!
