Four Ways to Save Money on Your Grocery Bill

How much do you spend on your weekly food shop? £40? £60? Or more? Food is an absolute necessity if you want to stay amongst the walking and talking. But even in the best of times, it’s not unusual for money to be tight. And lets face it – although we are now coming out the other side, now is not what you’d class as ‘the best of times’.

What can we do to keep our grocery bill down? If you are struggling to feed yourself and your family, help is out there. There are lots of charities that will be able to help you, as well as your local food bank.

If things are tight enough you are looking at ways to save money, but not severe enough to consider going to food banks, then check out the sites below to see if you can keep your grocery shop down to a reasonable price.

Olio

Olio is a food sharing app, which focuses on reducing food waste. It is really simple to use. Simply sign up, enter your location, and that’s it – you’re ready to start browsing. There are two listings – free, and homemade. Under the free tab, you can select from foods or non-foods. If you see an item that you would like, and click ‘Request This’. It will usually have listed when and where you can pick up from.

You can also purchase local homemade items, under the homemade tab. Finally, you can also list your own items, to help others in need, or sell under homemade for a little extra money.

Although you may not be able to get a full grocery shop on this app, all food items in the food tab are free, and may be a life saver if you’re struggling.

TooGoodToGo

Another anti food waste app; this is aimed towards businesses to sell discount food at the end of the day, rather than binning the food at the end of shift. Lots of businesses are signed up to the app, including the likes of Spar, Morrisons, Greggs and Costa, to name but a few. Again, easy enough to use, many shops will offer a discount ‘Magic Bag’, costing usually only a few pounds, and filled with food that goes out of date that day.

Approved Food

Approved food is listed as ‘The UK’s best selection of clearance food & drink at discount prices’. The reason they are able to sell their stock so cheap is that most things are past the best before sell by date; but still perfectly edible. Nothing is sold past the use by date. They also sell a range of other items; soft drinks, alcohol, household items, and pet items. You can organise an easy delivery, which is free if you spend over £55 – which may be harder to do than it sounds!

Cheapfood

Another site similar to Approved Food, Cheap Food also specialise in selling food close to, or past, the best before date. They also sell food in bulk, which automatically reduces the price. Again, they also offer alternative items, including baby, healthy and beauty, stationary, pets and household products.
