Sofas

It’s a fairly safe bet to say that almost every home in the UK, if not the world, has some sort of sofa, armchair or soft seating. Sofa companies, such as DFS, may have plenty of options, but you can be looking at a hefty sum. although some stores give you the option to pay interest free over a number of years, who wants the debt of your sofa hanging around your neck?

Scour your local selling pages, and chances are you will be able to find a cheap and cheerful sofa in need of some attention. Depending on your DIY skills may depend on the range of sofas you can look at, but with some fairly basic revamping you could have a brand new second hand sofa. Whether you choose to dye the cushions (check out Amazon for some sofa dye) or recover them completely, there are many ‘how to’ guides online to offer helpful hints. If you fancy getting really technical, strip it back to the wood, replacing springs and padding, for a complete sofa make over.

TV Stands

What is a comfy sofa, without a TV to point it at? TV stands are essential for the front room – unless you have a wall mounted TV! There are so many options with TV stands. You could buy an old wooden one, strip, sand, and repaint or varnish to suit the décor of your home.

If you are feeling daring, you could build one from scratch. If you have already tried and successfully built some patio furniture, then a TV stand will be no match for you! Measure the gap, pick a size and start designing. From there, its just a matter of cutting the wood, prepping it and again painting or varnishing to suit. If you manage to pick up the pallet for free, all it will cost is a tin of paint and some man hours!

You could take things even further; create bespoke furniture such as coffee tables, bookshelves and sideboards, all by using the same methods. Remember, the more you practise, the easier it will become, and you can begin creating things for other rooms, or even other people.
