After Tuesday’s food related theme of saving time as well as money, it got me thinking of other food related ways of saving time and money when it comes to food. Sauce jars can be quick and easy, but they can be rich, unhealthy and not always cost effective.

If you get inspired when it comes to cooking, why not try creating some of your own sauces?

Sweet & Sour

Sweet and sour sauce is incredibly versatile, as it can go with almost anything. Rice, pasta, any meat, any vegetables, chips, spring rolls… This recipe goes far. 16 servings, and at a mere 43 calories per serving, you can use it even if you’re on a health kick!

The sauce serves 6 – if you like your spaghetti and meatballs particularly saucy, then you could spread this over 4.

Red Wine

A perfect sauce to have in reserve, especially for your beef dishes. This recipe doesn’t include many ingredients, but is packed full of flavour! Try adding some stock from the meat you are using it with to really switch up the flavour!

Gravy

Another very simple addition to a meal, but one that can make or break it! Gone are the days where you can make up some Bisto with water – people expect more. If making a joint of meat (such as a roast), I would always advise adding the juices from the meat, along with some of the vegetable water to create flavour. But this gravy adds a kick, and I love the fact it tastes like KFC gravy!
