How To Build Your Own Herb Garden
Herbs are a great addition to any meal, and an easy way to add flavour. Having fresh herbs instead of dried can not only taste better and be more eye catching, but could also be free – if you decide to grow them yourself!
Finding the materials to build your own herb garden can be cheap enough if you look around. Mason jars can be simply old sauce jars, wood can be repurposed from old pallets or shelving. If you look around on places such as Facebook free pages, free ads, or even people’s front gardens. You may find you can source old curtain poles and plants pots cheaper than you think; remember, one mans junk is another mans treasure!
Indoor Herb Garden
You can get really creative with this, depending on how much space you have. For small indoor spaces, such as kitchen sides or windowsills, you could use mason jars, or old pasta sauce jars. Simply put a few pebbles in the bottom, then some decent quality soil, and plant your chosen herb. Although you can try your luck with any, certain herbs will thrive being grown indoors, so do your research.
Wall Herb Garden
For something a bit different, you could always build your own wall garden. There are so many options of what you could do, but my two favourites are either a small wooden frame with shelves (think a ladder but smaller), and secure to the wall. You can then pot your favourite herbs and place on the shelves. The other option you could try is attach some form of pole – such as a curtain pole – to your wall. You could do this in one straight line, or have them shorter and have two or three levels, on top of each other.
Then buy (or make) yourself some hanging plant pots, with small hooks so you can attach to the poles. Make sure if create a wall herb garden, that you pick a relatively sheltered all with good sunlight. You could also use an outdoor ladder and hook the plant pots to it, for a more rustic look.
Outdoor Herb Garden
For larger outdoor spaces, this is where you can let your creativity run wild. Whether you want something practical, like a specifically built herb garden, cut into sections for each different herb, or whether you want to get fancy. If you fancy letting your personality shine through (yes, I know its just a herb garden but roll with me here!), you could try using an old wagon wheel. Divide each spoke into separate sections, and get planting.
You could also use car tyres, stacked randomly, with each one holding a different herb. Why not try a selection of buckets, each painted different to the next, or adapt and use old watering cans? If you have a gazebo or pergola, you could even adapt a side to hold plant pots, and give your favourite summer spot a new purpose. If you really fancy pushing the boat out, why not try and source an old rowing boat and divide up into sections; it would definitely make a great focal point!
