How to Save Money with Homemade Cleaners
Cleaning your house is a chore, and using harsh chemicals is bad for your skin, as well as the environment.
But did you know these common household products that are likely to be lurking in your cupboards somewhere, can be used to clean your home just as well – if not better – than your average household cleaner?
Tomato Sauce
Yes – you read right; tomato sauce will help you clean your home! Or metals, to be more precise. Your taps, handles, cutlery. In fact, most of your silverware, brass and copper can given a new lease of life with ketchup. Thanks to its high acidity and gunky gooey texture, it adheres to the metal, giving you chance to rub it in and buff it up. Some people go one step further and add Worcestershire Sauce, which apparently makes it even more effective.
Lemon
Naturally acidic & with a lovely fresh scent, lemon is a commonly used ingredient in household cleaners. Dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, glass and floor cleaner… The list goes on. Great at tackling grease, and leaving a lovely lemony aroma, pair it with white vinegar for the best results – a quick google will bring you plenty of homemade cleaner recipes!

Bicarb
Bicarb is my favourite go to for cleaning my stubborn stains in the house. What can’t it clean?! Teeth, tea stained cups, grout, mattresses, ovens, hairbrushes, carpets…. This is a definite must have for your home! Best paired up with a trusty toothbrush (no, not your current one!), pour some powder into a small glass, and slowly add water until it forms a thick paste. Or add it to a cup of water, or sprinkle it down and then hoover back up a few hours later. Or pair it with white vinegar and wait for the fizz to stop. Just buy it – trust me!
White Vinegar
Although it is undeniably great paired with lemon, or bicarb, it can also hold its’ own as a trusty and reliable household cleaner. Whether in kettles or round showerheads in plastic bags to break down limescale, or diluted with water to clean floors and windows, or even boiled in the microwave to help with cleaning it out – there isn’t much it cant do. Although, prepare for your house to smell like a chip shop for the rest of the day!
Homemade Weed Killer
So you’ve spent all day cleaning the inside of your home with natural – if not a bit whiffy – products. Now it’s time to turn your attention to outside. The pesky weeds keep coming through, but you don’t want anything harmful to the wildlife that visits. With as little as 3 simple ingredients, you can have your garden weed free in no time! All you need is vinegar, salt, and washing up liquid, and a spray bottle, and you can claim your garden back from the weeds that are trying to take over!
