How to Save with Dishy Rishi’s Budget: Energy Saving Grant for Homeowners

You can’t accuse the government of being squeaky this year. Due to Covid-19, government spending has been higher in the last few months than any other month on record. In April 2020 alone, the government borrowed a staggering 89 billion to try and help keep the country afloat.

Having been a few weeks since Rishi Sunak’s budget, we focus on the Energy Saving Grant for Homeowners; what is it, and how it could benefit you.

What Is the Energy Saving Grant?

The Energy Saving Grant is a scheme offered by the government. This will help create jobs, as well as save money on bills. Each homeowner will be eligible to apply for a voucher of up to £5,000, and up to £10,000 for low income households. This will help cover the cost making their homes more energy efficient. Home improvements will include installing insulation, double glazing and replacing older boilers.

Not only should this help keep homes cheaper to run, and keep your carbon footprint down, but this should also help create 140,000 green jobs.

When Will It Be Available And How to Apply

The scheme is due to run for one year, which is due to launch in September 2020. The government have said they will cover the cost of at least two thirds of the bill. You would need to apply online, and get pointed to accredited local suppliers, who would then give you your quote. Once this has been approved, the government will issue a voucher for their share of the cost. Low income homes will not have to pay anything, with the government subsidising the total cost.

This grant also combines the governments aims to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, as well as creating new jobs in a time where so many have found themselves out of work.

Elsewhere in the Budget…

Rishi has also been busy trying to help get the hospitality sector back on its feet, by offering eating out discounts to get Brits back into restaurants, bars, cafes and pubs. The catchy slogan, ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ is being rolled out across the nation, promising a 50% reduction of up to £10. This is eligible for every single person – including children, within the UK who eats out in a participating business. The scheme will run throughout August 2020, and run Monday to Wednesday.

The hospitality and leisure sector has been one of the hardest hit sectors to suffer the effects of Covid-19. Although some businesses have risen to the challenge by offering takeaways, moving online and planning for their comebacks, some businesses have had no choice but to close; whether temporarily or permanently. This voucher helps not only the businesses affected by Covid-19 and a lack of customers, but also helps us as consumers in supporting our local businesses whilst saving money too.
