The Minefield Of Gym Memberships Unravelled

Summer is (hopefully!) here and with it comes the desire to get that body beach ready. Many of us want to shed a few pounds and have every intention of gaining a six pack (abs, not beer!) However, the world of gym memberships is a minefield, with numerous options to consider. You will need to proceed wisely, taking time to choose the right (and most budget-friendly!) option for you. With that in mind, here is a guide to shedding pounds whilst saving ££££s!

Be Honest With Yourself

First things first, ask yourself if you will actually use a gym regularly, should you choose to take out a membership. Be honest, as quite frankly it’s not worth forking out if you aren’t going to go. There are other (free!) ways to exercise, such as running or cycling, so decide whether a gym is right for you before you sign on the dotted line.

Take A Test Run

If you haven’t been in the gym environment before, it would be worth a trial run before you take out a membership. If you have a friend who is a member and they receive guest passes, it might be worth having a go before you jump in feet first. A number of gyms also offer ladies only areas which may make less experienced women feel more comfortable; you may not be quite ready to demonstrate your lunging technique to the world just yet!

Pay As You Go?

This can be a sensible way forward if you’re still uncertain about whether or not you’ll stick at it. Some gyms offer day passes, though these can work out rather more expensive in the long run. Short term memberships or rolling monthly contracts are also popular. They give you the option to leave if you find you’re more of a couch potato than gym bunny!

Full Steam Ahead!

When you’ve explored all the options and decided on the best membership for you, it’s time to take a leaf out of Del Boy’s book! Prices are not set in stone; it’s worth testing your haggling skills to see if you can get a cheaper deal. Sometimes if you’re referred by a friend that is already a member, you can get a discount. If you are happy to go at off-peak times or willing to take a no frills option, there may also be more budget-friendly options available.

Scan That Contract

Lastly, do check the small print. Gyms have been known to hide clauses in the small print. You want to check the notice period you need to give, should you choose to leave. Also check if the membership automatically renews or what happens if your circumstances change and you are no longer able to attend. It’s also worth checking the reviews and feedback of your gym of choice with friends and online. Arm yourself with as much information as possible before you take the plunge.

With all the research done and your decision made, time to put your best foot (or bicep!) forward. You’ll soon be stepping out with confidence this summer!
