Upcycling – The Many Faces of the Simple T Shirt

What is it about the simple T Shirt that makes it so versatile? They are a great fashion statement. They come in about a thousand different shapes, styles and colours. They can be dressed up, or dressed down. You can get them from Primark to Versace.

The prices just as varied as the designs. Vintage T Shirts, especially shirts from momentous occasions such as the ones sold at the concerts, can go for a small fortune. In fact, one of the world’s most expensive t shirts was sold for a whopping $400,000!

Then you have the designs. From bands, to memes, to sarcastic comments (my favourite!), there’s not much you can’t find on a T Shirt. You can even design your own if you’re feeling creative!

If you have a selection of old T Shirts you no longer wear but aren’t ready to throw out yet, here are four ideas to upcycle your old clothing.

Cushion Covers

Easy enough to make, and easily customisable to whatever size you require. Can also be a great meaningful gift. Think of a favourite top that you know someone has had their eye on, or a top from someone who is no longer about.

Simply cut to size, or mount onto another piece of fabric if you want to make it bigger. Add some stuffing, a zip, and sew the seams (I’d advise a sewing machine for ease, but it works just as well with a needle and thread!) and there you have it – a perfect pillow!

Blankets

More of an American tradition, but another touching gift. Also known as a memory blanket. Works best with plenty of tops. The more tops – the bigger the blanket! Cut the designs out to the same size, and sew together – you can make it ornamental, or more of a usable blanket, depending on how hard wearing you want to make it.

Framed Pictures

A modern twist on art, and again a lovely gift or memento. Grab your top of choice, and either fold into your desired shape, or simply leave as it is. Works great for tops that have been signed (think sport shirts or ones from bands). Buy your desired frame and set the top in the frame.

Give as the perfect thoughtful gift!

Miniature Clothing

Small children like cool tops too! Also, just as popular are dolls and teddy clothing – no, I’m not joking! In fact, if you’re a dab hand at sewing, why not get creative with the designs for the non-living; and look at selling them online for a few extra £££!

Masks

As masks are not going anywhere soon, and cost a small fortune (especially the amount I misplace!), why not make your own. Just about the easiest item on the list to make, and from one top alone you can create countless masks.

Just don’t forget to leave space to add your filter!
