What’s Your Style?

Clothes are so underrated. Everybody needs them. Try walking out your house and making your way to work in the buff, and see just how quickly you get arrested!

They are also a way to express your identity, help you feel confident, and of course, help you adjust to your environment; such as wearing shorts in the summer, coats in winter, and wellies in the rain.

But something as simple as a T-shirt can vary wildly in price, from a few quid to hundreds of pounds; if not more.

Why Do Clothing Prices Vary?

So why is it that clothes vary so much in price? Well, there is a multitude of reasons for the price variation. Firstly, the price can depend on the material used, or who made them. Are they bespoke, designer, or fresh off the factory line?

Clothing items imported from overseas, such as China, are extremely cheap and cheerful. However, the quality of the clothes is usually poor, the material cheaper, and the sizing iffy at best. The working conditions of the workers themselves have also come under fire often; with many condemning companies seen to support the ‘sweatshop’ working environment.

On the other end of the scale, designer companies, such as Lacoste or Versace, will often have much higher prices. The quality of clothing is usually much better, but the price is not always justified – with a simple branded Versace T-shirt costing an eye watering £480. Lacoste come in much cheaper at around the £50 for a branded polo top, compared to the likes of Versace, but again still more expensive than perhaps you’d like to pay.

Bespoke clothing can also vary, depending on what you want, where you are, what materials are used and the size of the company. In some countries, everyone has custom made suits; they are cheap and easy to pick up. In other countries, bespoke make suits can cost hundreds, if not thousands of pounds.

And don’t forget to shop about if you do find something you like – there is a chance you could find exactly the same item cheaper in a different shop or online!

Is It Just Clothes?

Absolutely not!  No matter the product, you will have variations in price. From toasters, to handbags, the same functioning item can have an open-ended price tag in either direction.

A large proportion of the cost based solely on the logo you are wearing, which can be seen as a status symbol, rather than a fashion choice. Walk into a high-end restaurant dripping in designer gear, you will probably see similarly dressed people, whereas in your local pub you probably wouldn’t see many people in head to toe in labels.

There is the saying you get what you pay for, but the trick of the matter is finding a balance, and as always – shop around for the best price! Just because you pay more money for something, it certainly does not guarantee the longevity of the item. However, as a general rule of thumb, the cheaper it is, the quicker it will ruin. Check reviews if possible, and ultimately, you have to go with what you’re happy with. Wear what makes you feel confident – just imagine how boring we would all be if everyone looked the same!
