4 Easy Ways To Save Money When Moving House

They say that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do. And as someone who has very recently moved – I wholeheartedly agree!

Whether you’re renting, or buying, there are all sorts of stresses involved with moving. But not all of them have to be as stressful as you may believe.

Rent Your Own Van

If you’ve ever hired a removal lorry, you’ll know the costs usually sit around 4 figures – which is crazy if you think about it!

Sure, you may not have to worry about packing, finding boxes, labelling the boxes, transporting the boxes, or removing them at the other end – but still! Renting your own van can literally save you thousands of pounds. If you can, rope in friends and family to help pack, load and drive, with the promise of unlimited hot drinks and a bacon sarnie – you’ll be swarming with volunteers before you know it!

Find Your Own Boxes

Boxes for moving house are surprisingly expensive, considering they are everywhere you look! 10 large (53cm x 53cm x 41cm) boxes on Amazon are £28.88 – and I wouldn’t really class that as large! Then if you need 20/ 30/ more boxes, the price can add up quickly.

Luckily for you, people are always moving! Chances are, someone you know, or someone near you will have some boxes in their loft/ garage/ behind their wardrobe, that you can use. It’s also worth keeping any decent size boxes you receive from online shops.

If you’re still struggling to locate your boxes, ask shops if they have any spare boxes, or even a quick post on social media – you’ll be hooked up with boxes before you know it!

Move in With Friends & Family

Although this technically doesn’t help you save money with moving itself – just think about it.

If you manage to move in with someone you know and trust, you could save more money for a deposit much quicker than if you were renting by yourself.

Sure you may still have to pay rent to the person you’re bunking up with, but it should be considerably less than actually renting your own place, especially given current renting prices. This means you could be in a position to buy your own home much quicker than you’d planned, therefore meaning less moving around rented accommodation, saving money on moving! Simples!

Tidy Up Your Old Rental

If you are renting, there is one thing you want guaranteed – your deposit back!

The easiest way to do this is make sure you have your rental for at least a week after you move. That way you can ensure you have the time to move home, and then go back to the old place to tidy.

Make sure any stains are removed from carpets and walls, hiring a carpet cleaner and grabbing a tin of paint if need be. Dust skirting boards, and grab some Polyfilla to fill in any chips/ scratches/ picture hook holes. Again, rope in friends and family to make it quick and painless – just don’t forget to buy them all a drink afterwards to say thank you!
