5 DIY Decoration Ideas to Organise Your Home & Make it Homely

I absolutely hate show homes. They may look so neat and tidy – but they’re just not homely! They lack the lived in feeling you get when you walk into someone’s actual home. I prefer the look of organised chaos!

Don’t get me wrong, my house isn’t spotless. It’s lived in. But I do like to make it unique and organised, without spending an absolute fortune.

Frames

Most people will have some form of wall art; whether it be photos, pictures or even mirrors. One easy way to make yours unique is to create a frame. You can be as artsy or as basic as you like with this.

From the style of wood, to the size, to the colour. Why not find some driftwood, and stain it? Or get some offcuts from your local DIY store and paint them to match your room of choice. You can even create multiple pieces in different sizes for a matching theme throughout your home.

Shelving

Even the most uncluttered of houses could do with storage, especially if you have things you’d like to display. Collectables, miniature statues, or house plants. Create the shelving in the size you want, where you want.

Create standard floating shelves with the right brackets, hanging shelves with pipes or ropes, or even the fashionable hexagon shelving that everyone seems to have right now. Your house, your designs.

Tables

Coffee tables are hit and miss. Personally, I prefer side tables to a full on coffee table; they just sit there in the middle of the room, taking up space that could otherwise be taken up by a cat/ dog/ child/ beanbag/ pot of gold.

However, if you want to create your own, again be as daring as you want! Whether a single, simple coffee table to organise your room, or multiple detailed side tables, get some inspiration from places such as Pinterest (my favourite site in case you hadn’t already guessed!) and get cracking. Practise makes perfect!

Benches

Benches are another home staple that seems to be timeless. Whether outside or in, they suit anywhere. Hallways, porches, kitchens and gardens – and as small or as big as your space allows.

From storage benches to solid benches, you can upcycle or create a bespoke piece to create the look you’re after.

Jars, Storage & Organisational Baskets

Being a bit of a neat freak (think Monica from Friends!) this is definitely my favourite option. Quite simply because you can organise ANYHING YOU WANT! From fridges, to lingerie drawers, to food cupboards, to tool sheds, to under the bed, to your make up table. The organisational options know no limits!

You can use and decorate jars, buy storage baskets, and find drawer dividers, to organise the messiest of spaces. Depending on how organised you want to go, you could even buy the large plastic tubs and get up in your loft (I’d dread to know where to start with mine!). Again, a quick search on Pinterest will show you just how creative you can get!
