How to Keep Other Bills Down When Energy Prices Go Up

Another summer is over, the nights are drawing in, and the season of goodwill is almost upon us. Unfortunately, Halloween is not the only scary thing to occur this month. As you may have seen, energy prices have soared, with Martin Lewis warning us all not to change our energy suppliers right now.

With 2021 being the first year ever that the price has risen twice within the year, and also taking into account that the price cap is the highest its ever been, now is a great time to look at other ways to keep bills down.

Buy Little & Often

With Christmas coming up, we also have to contend with the latest warnings of food, basic necessities and presents running out. Inevitably this means that due to the supply and demand rule, prices will undoubtedly soar.

By purchasing little and often, not only can you spread the cost over a few months, but also hopefully ensure you manage to get what you need, rather than getting everything at the last minute in a panic!

Renegotiate Any Insurances

I have gone over this so many times, but I will stress it again. ALWAYS RENEGOTIATE YOUR CONTRACTS once they are up. No matter how ‘loyal’ a customer you are, or how long you have been with them, they will always push you to a crappy deal. By asking to be put on a better deal, you could save yourself tens, if not hundreds across the year. This is especially true for house insurances, mobile phone deals, and TV packages.

Check Subscriptions for Something Cheaper

Whilst you are checking for any contracts that are up, bear in mind that it may well be worth your while to cancel, and go with another provider. Sometimes the provider you are with just can’t (or won’t) match or beat the price given by another company.

Always check about for other options. Not only does this give you more bargaining power when speaking to your current provider, but it also lets you know what is a realistic good price and what isn’t.

If you do end up cancelling your TV subscriptions to something that doesn’t include live TV, you may be eligible to cancel your TV license, saving you even more money in the long run.

Check Your Bank for Any Unknown Direct Debits

This one is easier than it sounds, but so vital to do! Every month (or as often as you are able), have a quick scan of your outgoings, to make sure there are no transactions that are unfamiliar to you). While you are checking that, also have a quick scan of your bank account packages and savings account, to make sure you have the best deals for you.

Many bank accounts charge, but come with additional benefits – however, what good is paying an extra £8 every month for car breakdown cover if you don’t drive, or holiday insurance if you don’t go away? Just make sure you use what you’re paying for.
